Paint Techniques - How to Sponge Paint a room

How would one go about revamping a dull looking space - one which needs a little bit of a facelift without breaking the bank?

There are many paint techniques that one could use, like stenciling, stamping or Sponge Painting. Of all the paint techniques, sponge painting is one of the easiest to try, especially if you are not a dab hand at painting. Sponge painting is an inexpensive way to transform a room from boring into something attractive and impressive.

Not everyone has the perfect D.I.Y. skills to do professional painting jobs around the home, but with a few simple sponge painting tips this can easily be achieved. Even the most inexperienced of us can impress with this really interesting paint technique!

What do I need to get before I Sponge Paint my space?

Good quality interior paint like gloss paint, eggshell paint or satin interior paint

Long stick to stir the paint, so that you can reach the bottom of the tin

Lighter shade to sponge (or rag ) the top surface of the paint

Bucket to mix the paint in

Brushes or Roller to paint the wall

Sponge Painting Tips

Firstly, it is essential to purchase a really good natural Sea Sponge to achieve the best sponge painting techniques.

Secondly, for the best sponge painting results, it is important that any cracks or holes be filled in, if there are any.

Using a slightly contrasting, lighter colour for the top coat, it is important that the colours are not too much in contrast of each other.

The base coat that the wall has been painted in should be dry before proceeding to sponge the wall, with the lighter colour paint.

The sponge should be dipped in water before proceeding to dip it into the lighter colour or paint before doing a “circular “ movement with the wrist, and dabbing the lighter shade all over the surface of the darker paint, transforming the once bland surface in a dappled effect

If you accidently make some of the wall too “blobby”, then wait until all the paint is dry before painting over this.

Don’t forget to paint in the corners.
