How to paint a design on a concrete floor

Didn’t think you can get creative on a concrete floor? Well you can and here is your opportunity to paint your own design on your house’s floor, the children’s bathroom or even your painter’s room. (If you’re an artist.) Isn’t that fab? It is inexpensive and a wonderful paint technique that will create a floor that will last for years to come.  But be warned, it isn’t something to be done in one day, put at least three days aside to paint a concrete floor.

  1. If the floor you want to paint is inside the house first check the floor before your start painting. Are there puddles, is the floor damp? If so, you have to get a professional to fix the seepage problem and wait for it to dry which can take an awfully long time! Once it has dried completely, then only can you start painting.
  2. If your floor is free of seepage problems you start by cleaning the floor thoroughly! But if there are grease stains you first have to clean it properly, otherwise your paint won’t stick.  Once it has been cleaned leave it to dry for three days.
  3. Sand off any paint or bumpy bits like paint or glue residue by using a hand sander and 80-grit sandpaper. Vacuum afterwards.
  4. If there are any cracks or holes in the floor fix it with Cement Fixall and let it dry completely.
  5. At last the cleaning process is finished and the painting can begin. Using a roller paint brush apply two coats of primer and a stain blocker. Let it dry after each coat.
  6. Use a roller paint brush to paint two coats of latex flat paint.
  7. At last you, it is time to get creative and paint your design on the floor using geometric shapes and let it dry completely!
  8. The last part is hazardous so be careful and use a respirator mask! Once your design has dried, roll on two coats of Breakthrough sealer with a 1.4 inch nap roller, and let it dry.

If you’ve followed each step down to the tee you will have a beautifully designed and indestructible concrete floor!
