Here’s what you need to know about acrylic latex paint

Scratching your head about different paint types? What exactly is acrylic latex paint? What is it used for? The questions could go on and on, so here’s some information to keep you from going a bit crazy with confusion. Keep reading to make sure you choose the right paint for the right job.

What is acrylic latex paint?

Basically, there are two types of paint: acrylic latex, and oil-based or alkyd paint. Often acrylic latex paint is simply referred to as latex paint. With all types of paint, the composition is a solid (or a binder) and a vehicle. The binder in acrylic latex paint is acrylic resin and the vehicle in the paint is water.

What makes acrylic latex paint better?

Acrylic latex paint is of superior quality amongst the water-based paint. In addition to this, acrylic latex paint (unlike oil-based paint) is more breathable, flexible and washable. It also adheres better and is more opaque, plus it retains colour more effectively. It’s also a lot easier to apply, since your painting equipment – including brushes – can easily be cleaned using soapy water as opposed to thinners, which can be extremely dangerous to keep around the house.

What is acrylic latex paint used for?

Since the paint is so flexible and extremely durable, acrylic latex paint is most often used to paint exterior walls. It binds particularly well to the rough surfaces of walls, such as brick and plaster, but doesn’t do too well on glossy surfaces. Acrylic latex paint is one of the more expensive paints, but it is worth it in the long-run to withstand the elements it will face as well as the expansion and contraction from heat and cold.
