How to maintain a painted metal roof or garden fence

Do you think that maintaining a painted metal roof or fence is a chore beyond your abilities? Think again! With a little DIY know-how, keeping the exterior house paint of your home looking spick, span and spotless is actually a simple process.

The most important skill you need to have under your belt however, is knowing how to paint metal: if metal surfaces are not correctly prepared in the first place, then maintenance will be near impossible.

1.Clean the roof or garden fence to be painted thoroughly

When it comes to any kind of house painting, a clean start is essential. Remove as much rust and old paint as possible using a wire scourer, sandpaper and paint stripper. If the metal you are painting is new, use a mild detergent to remove any oils on the surface.

  1. Apply a metal paint primer

Since acrylic paint works best on metal, you should choose an oil based primer, and apply 2 coats, allowing for thorough drying time inbetween.

  1. Apply 2 to 3 coats of acrylic paint

Use a brush rather than spray paint for a better, longer lasting finish. Paint thin, even coats and allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.

  1. Apply an appropriate sealer

For exterior surfaces, apply a sealer to add protection against the elements.

  1. Maintain the colour and shine

Once a year, wash the roof or fence using a high pressure hose and a mild solution of detergent and ammonia, rinsing thoroughly with clean water. Apply sealer if necessary.
