Wall painting techniques
Wall painting techniques are one of the most creative ways to change the look of any room. It is also easier to change than wall paper when you are no longer satisfied with a particular look. Using different wall paint techniques and interior paint colours you can achieve any look you want.
General tips for wall painting
- Never apply latex paint to enamel-based paint as it won’t adhere to the wall. However if your walls are painted with enamel-based paint and you want to change it to latex paint it is necessary to apply a primer first.
- Depending on the look you want, choose matching or contrasting colours. Hues that is slightly different than the base coat will provide a subtle change in appearance. Contrasting colours will create a dramatic effect.
Wall paint techniques
- Rag wall painting
You will need several rags, a paint tray, a paper bag and your choice of paint colour.
- Pour your paint of choice in the paint tray.
- Wad up a rag, dip it into the paint, dab of excess paint on the paper bag and randomly apply to the wall using gentle pressure.
- When the rag becomes too saturated with paint rather use a new rag.
Tip: Various materials create different effects.
- Sponge wall painting
You will need natural sea sponges, a paper bag and your paint colour of choice.
- Purchase natural sea sponges at the cleaning isle or beauty section at your local store.
- Wet the sponge and ring out excess water.
- Dip the one side of the sponge in paint and practice on the paper bag.
- After practicing begin applying the paint to the wall in various directions to achieve an indiscriminate look.
- Plastic bag wall painting
You will need a grocery plastic bag, a paper bag and your preferred colour of paint.
- Wad up a small, plastic grocery bag, dip the one side in paint and practice on a paper bag.
- After practicing apply the paint to the wall. The plastic bag won’t absorb any paint so you’ll have to dab it on scrap paper or brown paper before each application.
- Feather painting
Feathers create a unique, wispy pattern on walls. You will need a couple of feather dusters, the paint colour of your choice and a paper bag.
- Dip the tips of the feathers into the paint and remove excess paint on the paper bag.
- Randomly apply to the walls.
Tip: If the feather duster accumulates too many layers of paint use a new feather duster.
