Painting Tips: How to Create a Feature Wall

Plain white walls come with a number of benefits, such as fitting in with changing décor and the ability to keep your space cool during the warmer summer months. As painting suppliers, however, we know the beautiful effect that can be achieved by creating a feature wall.

Sometimes, a feature wall painted in a single, rich colour can turn a room into a space that you really want to spend time in. Here are the top painting tips that we always give painting contractors and DIY enthusiasts:

  • Always start by prepping the wall before you paint it. Check the wall for any cracks, remove any screws and fill any holes that need to be filled.
  • After this, give the entire wall a good scrub down with soap and water. By removing any dirt, grease and grime, you’re giving the paint a better chance to stick. Use masking tape to create the borders of your feature wall. Be sure to use masking tape that is intended for painting so that the paint isn’t removed along with the tape when you have finished the job.
  • Once the tape is in place, you’re ready to start painting. Start by painting along the tape and in the corners. After this, you can use a paint roller for the rest of the wall. If you are using a rich, dark colour, you will need about three coats of paint for your feature wall. Now all you have to do is wait for your paint to dry before you can move furniture or other items back into place.
