The advantages of using oil based paints

Paint can make such a big difference to the look and feel of any building. Most of us are unaware of the different types of paint available out there, which usually leads us to simply buy any type of paint (as long as it’s the right colour). Oil based paint in South Africa is one of the most popular paint types for various projects.

Oil based paints hold many advantages over its water based counterpart:

  • Cleaning: Cleaning walls can be a real headache. A wall painted with oil based paint is much easier to clean and keep clean than those painted with other types of paint. Oil based paint is also more resistant to stains than other types, meaning that it will be cleaned less often.
  • Strength:  Oil based paint is in general a lot stronger than the competition. It is also more resistant to chips and marks. It is a good choice when you have to cover up some imperfections on the walls.
  • Variety: Oil based paints are offered in a great variety of colours and finishes, ranging from high-gloss to matt and perfect for both interior and exterior walls. Depending on the type and finish you go for, you may not even require a under coat, saving you time and effort.

Like all things in life there are also drawbacks. When considering oil based paint, you should also take note of the following:

Oil based paint can discolour if applied over masonry. It also has a strong odour when newly applied and it is quite hard to touch up imperfections. Remember that this type of paint is also flammable so take the necessary safety precautions.
