DIY painting tips

Getting a professional painter to do your paint jobs can be quite costly. You know that many people do their own painting, so why not go the DIY route and learn how to paint? With all the self-help guides available today, it’s much easier than you think! Here are some great DIY painting tips that will make the job easy:

  • Quantity estimates . There are many paint quantity estimators available on the internet that you can use to find out exactly how much paint you need (it can become a hassle if you don’t order enough paint or if you’re stuck with extra tins that you can’t get rid of).
  • Test the surface . Paint colours can be misleading if you are looking at a colour guide, always test the area that you are about to paint for applying an entire coat of paint.
  • Paint preparation . Clean the area that you are going to paint. If you are painting the exterior, clean the sand and if you are painting the interior get a proper primer. Also scrape off any existing paint.

Latex based paint and oil based paint

There are a few differences between latex based paint and oil based paint. To name a few – oil based paint lasts longer but takes longer to dry (so be sure to leave untouched for 24 hours) and latex based paint dries quickly but is not as long lasting. It is better to use oil based paints for doors, trims etc.

Choosing a paint roller for your DIY job

You will probably see a range of rollers when you go paint brush and roller hunting. The rule of thumb when it comes to paint rollers is: the rougher the surface, the rougher your roller should be (and vice versa).
